As someone who reads a lot of romance but rarely picks up contemporary I kinda get where Katie's coming from (at least in her thumbnail). As a primarily Historical Romance reader I'm often very confused about what people get out of contemporary romances because as an HR reader so much of the intrigue of the romance for me comes from getting to explore a unfamiliar setting. The different social norms of historical periods and the interesting things you often learn about facets of a characters life become more novel and engaging in a historical setting.I am not going to watch the video, but Katie Colson's new video title is rubbing me the wrong way. Like congrats for being different by reading another popular romance, it's just dark this time instead of contemporary. This is probably me just being in a bitchy mood, but it just annoys me that in her title and thumbnail she is acting like it's weird to have chess and golf in a book, meanwhile, she is calling a book with SA and stalking green flags. Like whatever kind of romance you like, but I just can't help but get the "I'm not like other romance readers" vibes that (in my opinion) a lot of dark romance readers have.
Also her description is about how being aro/ace means she has difficulty with enjoying romance - again, fair enough - but it just makes it even more baffling to me that she thinks Haunting Adeline is better. I know she loved Magnolia Parks though so having taste for controlling men fits.
Again, she is entitled to think and feel however she wants about the books and since I haven't watched the video maybe it's not even as much of a "contemporary vs dark" situation as I am making it, but my eyes rolled the second I saw it in my feed and I am in a bitchy mood and needed to complain about something...

in a vacuum, yeah, there's no problem. in reality, people are biased, and sister-reviewer was definitely leaving reviews on her sister's peer's works, not just molly's, and leaving one stars. it's not a HUGE deal, but doing it anonymously? i don't think we can pretend that sister-reviewer was totally faultless. it is, at the very least, kiiiinda sketchy.
It's not a co flict of interest for an author to have a sister who reviews books on goodreads. Many authors are reviewers for trade publications and give reviews for books by authors they know and that’s not considered a conflict.
